The Public League’s basketball rankings (Feb. 27, 2017)

Schurz made the largest jump in this week’s rankings.

1. Simeon (24-3) 1

The Wolverines are the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Thornridge Sectional, but their regional includes a potentially-dangerous Marian Catholic squad. The Spartans haven’t played as well as expected this season, but they have a big frontline and a talented point guard in junior Chase Adams.

2. Morgan Park (19-6) 2

Senior forward Lenell Henry and senior guard Cam Irvin both picked up scholarship offers this past week.

Henry received an offer from Northern Arizona, which is where North Lawndale’s Carlos Hines committed earlier this season, and Mississippi Valley State. Irvin was offered by Mississippi Valley State.

3. Curie (23-3) 3

Last week, senior guard Elijah Joiner was named first-team all-city by the Chicago Sun-Times. Allante’ Pickens made the third team and Terry Smith Jr. was honorable mention.

The Condors are the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Proviso East Sectional. They will face the winner of No. 8 De La Salle and No. 9 Proviso East in a regional final on Friday night.

4. Whitney Young (20-7) 4

This past week, Lucas Williamson was named first-team all-city by the Chicago Sun-Times. Junior guard Javon Freeman made the third team.

The Dolphins are the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A Proviso East Sectional. They are heavy favorites to win their regional.

5. Orr (18-5) 5

The Spartans beat Uplift in the Class 2A Orr Regional final. The Titans, who were ranked No. 2 by the Associated Press entering the game, were a huge test for Orr. IC Catholic is up next, and Orr will likely play DePaul Prep in the Guerin Sectional championship game.

If you haven’t, read Rick Telander’s five-part series on Orr. It’s really, really well done.

1. Curie (22-2) 1

The Condors’ quarterfinal with Orr is poised to be a great, great game.

2. Simeon (21-2) 2

The Wolverines’ city quarterfinal with Farragut has been moved up to today, Monday, due to Simeon hosting a girls basketball regional on Wednesday.

3. Whitney Young (19-5) 3

Kenwood beat the Dolphins at the Chicago Elite Classic in early December. They’ll meet again on Wednesday.

4. Morgan Park (17-4) 4

The Mustangs defeated North Lawndale in last year’s city quarterfinals. Can they do it again?

5. Orr (16-4) 6

The Spartans, somehow, are the No. 3 seed in a Class 2A subsectional. They will have to beat Uplift to win their own regional.
